CBC's Morning North giving away giant pumpkin seeds

As spring weather continues in northeastern Ontario, you may be thinking ahead to what will be in your garden, and if a giant pumpkin is on the harvest list, CBC’s Morning North can help.

As spring weather continues in northeastern Ontario, you may be thinking ahead to what will be in your garden, and if a giant pumpkin is on the harvest list, CBC's Morning North can help.

All you need to do is send a stamped self-addressed envelope, and we'll pop a seed in that envelope with a few instructions and send it back.

Last year, Stephen Smith helped grow the Morning North giant pumpkin at Science North.

He's no longer with Science North, but he is still growing giant pumpkins, and now, he's on the board of the Northern Ontario Agri-Food Education and Marking Inc.

Smith said he'd like to see more entries of giant pumpkins in the upcoming Anderson Farm Museum Heritage Society Fall Fair.

"We've got our giant pumpkin contest there again," he said.

"What we're hoping is to have many people come out with many entries of giant pumpkins."

Smith's giant pumpkin won that contest last year, and credits his success to research and practical experience.

To get your giant pumpkin seed, send your envelope to:

Smith also left behind two copies of a book called "A Beginner's Guide to Growing Atlantic Giant Pumpkins."

To win one of those books, write your best poem about a pumpkin and recite it to our talkback line at 1-800-461-1138. If you do, we'll put your name in a draw for the book.
