Board's perspective on Sudbury teachers' strike gets listener's blood boiling
Rainbow board chair says ordering teachers back to work is best for students, but caller disagrees
The English public high school teachers' strike in Sudbury and beyond will be over shortly — but it's not ending the way some teachers wanted.
Legislation tabled on Monday could see teachers in Sudbury, Peel and Durham regions forced back to work as early as Thursday.
The chair of the Rainbow District School Board, Doreen Dewar, said in an interview on CBC Sudbury's radio show Morning North, that ordering the teachers back into classrooms is not ideal, but is in the best interests of students.
"[In negotiations], we were in a situation where there was an impasse," she said. "The bottom line was that every day that went by our students were disadvantaged."
"If we can get the legislation, or the notice before 7 o'clock on any given day, school bus[es] will be back on their routes the next morning," said Dewar.
Not everyone agrees that back to work legislation is the best way forward. Listen to what one listener had to say about Dewar's position on the teachers' strike:
