A washed out gravel road on Highway 165 has swallowed a vehicle near La Ronge, Sask.

Rosemarie Sewap was heading out on a camping trip southeast of the community when she came across the abandoned vehicle around 10 p.m. CST Saturday.

She said it was sitting at the bottom of a ditch — a place where a road used to be.

"I was like, 'Oh my God, I hope that person wasn't hurt' — you know, whoever was in that car," said Sewap.

According to RCMP, officers were notified of the single vehicle crash earlier in the day. They said the car had been driven into the portion of the highway that had been washed away.

Police said the driver didn't suffer any injuries.

Due to recent rain

Highway 165 has since been closed from junctions 106 to 912 while the situation is being dealt with.

"The washout was due to recent significant rain," the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure said in an email.

The ministry said repairs will involve replacing two culverts, along with filling in the washout with gravel and other materials.

Until the road is reopened, motorists are asked to use detours found on Highways 912, 913 and 106.
