The 17-year-old who planned the robbery that left Gilbert Kagabo dead was sentenced in Saskatoon provincial court to three years for manslaughter on Thursday.

The convicted teen cannot be named because of his age.

Kagabo, a 15-year-old high school student, was shot during a robbery on Nov. 2, 2019, outside a bank on the city's east side.

Judge Marilyn Gray said the convicted teen admitted to arranging the meet with Kagabo, telling a co-accused to bring a gun and instructing the co-accused to shoot Kagabo if he ran.

Kagabo was shot once in the back and died at the scene after trying to escape his robbers.

Earlier this month, Gray accepted a joint sentencing submission of 5.5 years for the 15-year-old teen who fired the shot after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He also faces a lifetime firearm ban.

Gray also accepted a joint sentencing submission of three years for another teen who pleaded guilty to attempted robbery.

On Thursday, Gray sentenced the 17-year-old who pleaded guilty to manslaughter to three years. She gave him only limited credit for the 16 months he's already been behind bars, taking six months off his custodial sentence. This means he'll spend an additional 20 months in secure custody, followed by 10 months on probation.

Gray felt the teen needs more programming in a controlled setting, both to protect the community and to advance his own rehabilitation.
