Saskatoon's outdoor public places will be smoke-free starting Jan. 1. The Smoking Bylaw will prohibit smoking and vaping (using e-cigarettes) in outdoor public places that are owned and operated by the city.

The list includes:

  • Parks
  • Playgrounds
  • Sports fields
  • Spray pads
  • Outdoor and paddling pools
  • Skateboard sites
  • Golf courses
  • Tennis courts
  • Dog parks
  • Public squares
  • Areas around civic buildings

People can smoke or vape on sidewalks bordering the properties.

The city says healthy living and care for the environment drove the initiative. It says studies suggest someone can be exposed to the same level of secondhand smoke whether they are indoors or outdoors.
