A Saskatoon woman has drowned at Round Lake, northwest of Prince Albert.

It happened about 8:30 p.m. CST Sunday at the lake, which is about 20 kilometres north of Highway 3 in the rural municipality of Buckland.

RCMP said two women, ages 23 and 24, were in separate kayaks in the middle of the lake when one kayak and then the other capsized.

The two women, both from Saskatoon, attempted to swim to shore, but only the 23-year-old made it.

She was taken to hospital for observation and was later released.

The body of the 24-year-old woman was located on the south side of the lake about 9:45 p.m.

Police said weather conditions were good and the lake was calm at the time of the incident.

They also said drugs and alcohol may have played a role.

Neither woman was wearing a life jacket.

The name of the woman who died hasn't been released at the request of family, the RCMP said.
