A 25-year-old Saskatoon man is fighting for his life after a beating and stabbing just after midnight.

It happened on the 1800 block of 20th Street West.

Police were called to St. Paul's Hospital when staff called about the injured man. Officers were able to trace back the route to where the assault happened.

As the sun rose this morning, they were concentrating on the north alley of the 1800 block. Officers had cruisers stationed at both ends, and police tape prevented any through traffic.

There were yellow evidence flags marking a trail from the backyard of a bungalow and east down the alley toward St. Paul's Hospital.

Members of the Targeted Enforcement and Forensic units were both on the scene.

Police said the man's injuries are serious, but were not able to provide any more details.

The alley was taped off overnight. (Dan Zakreski/CBC)
