Saskatoon made its own record breaking "long john" donut

It's not a doughnut you would want to pick up at the local drive-thru.

This morning, students at Saskatoon Community Learners High School will attempt to make a five meter-long long john at its Nestor's Bakery location.

"It required quite a bit of thought," said Keith Jorgenson, the school's Director of Education. "Sixteen feet is a very long long john."

Since the school's deep fat fryer is slightly smaller than five meters in length, the group has had to improvise.

"We've built a channel, almost like a conveyor belt, where the oil will be poured over the doughnut, and kind of run down the end," said Jorgenson.

The school has been working with the Guinness Book of World Records for more than a year, making sure the project met the group's specifications.

The doughnut must be cooked in the same manner as a regular doughnut, and the finished product must be given away for free.

Bringing awareness

The school is using the event to raise the profile of the school.

The Saskatoon Community Learners High School is a special program designed to reach at-risk youth. Based out of the Pleasant Hill bakery, the school teaches life skills, like cooking, graphic arts and car repair.

"We are an independent high school," said Jorgenson. "We don't have any access to capital funds to be able to do repairs and renovations and expansions."

Other than donations, the school relies on bakery sales.

"They can order a dozen doughnuts and we will deliver them to their workplace,' said Jorgenson. "They can contribute even a dollar online on Indiegogo."
