Saskatoon woman gets rude awakening when stray bullet passes through headboard

The bullet passed through a window, an apartment building wall, a headboard attached to a bed, then another wall before finally coming to rest in a rubber tote in a closet.

Drew Bilboe, executive director of the Saskatoon Housing Coalition, says the woman who was in bed in the apartment suite is still traumatized by what happened around 9 a.m. CST Monday at Canterbury Place, a coalition-owned building at 101 Avenue N S.

"She's very upset and concerned for her safety," Bilboe said.

Police are investigating reports of shots fired Monday morning at that location. Officers searched a nearby home after the incident and seized some firearms.

Bilboe said it has been a violent year for people in the building.

"Late fall there was a gunfight outside. Two rival gangs were chasing each other behind the same building," he said.

"Our apartment cameras caught the two individuals running right beside our tenant, with guns."

Bilboe said tenants in the building, who all have persistent mental health issues, fear for their safety. He said the location of the latest incident makes it particularly alarming.

"This was right on 22nd Street at 9:30 a.m. We start work at 9."

Bilboe said the woman from the apartment is living at another location until she feels safe enough to return to her suite.

Police said no one was injured and that they don't believe the shots were random.
