Gordie at the beach
Lisa Hrycuik from Rosthern, Sask. wrote in to Saskatoon Morning to share the story of how her seven-year-old son, Jack, met Howe at the beach in July of 2012.
"We were on the beach at Waskesiu, and my mom spotted Gordie Howe wading in the shallow water," Hrycuik wrote.
"He was visiting with his son and grandson and touring some of his favourite Saskatchewan sites. My then seven-year-old, hockey-crazed son, Jack, had just been reading facts about Mr. Hockey on the way to the lake, so [he] knew all about him," Hrycuik explained.
"We were able to get a photo with him on the beach! He and his family were very friendly and accommodating. And Gordie is sooo tall! It's an experience my son will always remember."
Last public appearance
Howe will be in Saskatoon on Friday for the 55th Annual Kinsmen Sports Celebrity Dinner. The event is billed as the "final tribute to Mr. Hockey" and Wayne Gretzky plans to attend.
