Witness says Saskatoon man fatally stabbed after exchange with attacker

A man who says he witnessed Saskatoon's eighth homicide of the year says it happened after a brief confrontation on a Riversdale street.

Lyle Lecomte was in his front yard on Avenue E S on Saturday afternoon when he said he saw young man walking north on the other side of the street, toward 20th Street.

Lecomte was talking to his neighbour when a sudden movement down the street caught his eye.

"The person that did the stabbing came up from the alley and turned around and exchanged words with him. The guy blocked up his arm and then got stabbed three times in the side by the other perpetrator," he told CBC News.

A man who says he witnessed Saskatoon's eighth homicide of the year says it happened after a brief confrontation on a Riversdale street.

Police were called to the 300 block of Avenue E S at around 1:30 p.m. Saturday. They arrived to find a seriously injured 24-year-old man on the sidewalk.

He was rushed to Royal University Hospital where he died.

Police are not saying how the victim was injured.

Lecomte said he was too far away to hear the exchange, but he said there was no yelling or screaming.

"As soon as he was stabbed, the guy was gone, ran off, just as fast as he came out, he went back," he said.

"He started walking back down the street after being stabbed and he got by the first tree there and that's when he started feeling the pain."

Lecomte said his neighbour called 911.

Police have not confirmed Lecomte's narrative to CBC.

In a news release, police said they interviewed and released one suspect. They are now reviewing surveillance video from homes and businesses in the area.
