Saskatoon explores possibility of downtown arena
Arena and convention centre aging, says SaskTel Centre CEO
Saskatoon's two major public meeting and gathering places are trying to set the course for their future in the city. It's work that could set the stage for a downtown arena.
SaskTel Centre and TCU Place are joining forces to hire a consultant.
"We are trying to find out what the best course of action is," said SaskTel Centre CEO Will Lofdahl. "Both facilities are aging and we operate in a competitive market."
The options to be studied will be wide-open, but according to Lofdahl, they will include the idea of building a new arena, in a new location.
"We want them to look at whether or not keep SaskTel Centre in its current location is a viable option."
One of the potential locations could be downtown, near TCU Place, but the future of that facility is also part of the proposed study.
"What amenities does that need to maintain its vibrancy?" asked Lofdahl.
The two centres have sent their request for a study off to targeted experts. They hope to hire a consultant this fall, with a report completed by June 15, 2017.
Lofdahl is excited about the outcome of the study, but for now, is keeping his thoughts on what he believes is the best option for SaskTel Centre to himself.
"I don't want to taint the results or taint the view going in."
