Saskatoon couple moves to protect Dennis the pet raccoon

Wendy and Ron Hook are planning to move out of Saskatoon in order to protect their beloved pet raccoon, Dennis.

Dennis the 14 kg raccoon violates a city bylaw

Raccoon-lover Wendy Hook is planning to move out of Saskatoon in order to protect her beloved pet, Dennis.

Hook announced Tuesday on Facebook that she is seeking alternative living arrangements outside of the city, after only living in the city for two months.

In the Saskatoon, it's illegal to keep a raccoon as a pet.

"I just want to live in the city of Saskatoon, be a contributing member of society, and take my pet for a walk," Hook said.

"I began to realize that this just isn't going to work."

Earlier in October, Hook took Dennis to a friend's apartment outside of city limits to protect the raccoon. She couldn't continue that arrangement because the friend's building wasn't pet friendly.

Now, Hook is worried Dennis will be taken away if she continues to live in Saskatoon.

She was considering petitioning the city to change the bylaw, but she doesn't believe they will make an exception for one raccoon.

According to provincial laws, people can keep raccoons as pets so long as they are kept in cages. In Saskatoon, however, raccoons and other exotic animals are not allowed as pets.

Hook says she will do whatever it takes to keep Dennis.
