Homegrown 'Satch and Moe' comic book to debut at Saskatoon Comic and Entertainment Expo
Regina co-workers team up and form upstart comic book company
The Benevolent Misadventures of Satch and Moe, is the work of three creative Regina security guards, and it's set to premier at the Saskatoon Comic and Entertainment Expo.
Kristofer Olson, Curtis Addison and Josh Strait are co-workers who bond over, as Olsen put it "anything nerdy that appealed to us."
"I was working the overnight shift and Curtis was my supervisor and Josh was working the daytime shift and the three of us would have little conferences every morning where we would talk about pop culture, comic books, and movies," he said.
This is something we are doing cowboy style- Kristofer Olson
"Between the three of us, our love of comic books, that was the main link," offered Addison.
So, they joined forces to create The Benevolent Misadventures of Satch and Moe. Sure, one of them is an artist, one is an actor, and the other is a writer, but still, these three self-described nerds really had no idea what they were doing.
"This is something we are doing cowboy style," said Olson.
They formed Broken Jack Comics and set to work putting together their comic book. It looked like they would come out with a black and white version, but there were printer issues and that version was scrapped.
Now, three years later, the full 28-page tale of two unlikely buddies is out for everyone to see.
More Family Guy than super hero
The comic book features the mythical beast Bigfoot (Satch) and Moe, who the creators describe as "kind of a bum." Moe finds trouble and hides out in the woods where he meets up with Satch. It's an R-rated adventure. Imagine Trailer Parks Boys meets Scooby Doo.
"The book is a lot of fun; it's a great read, bright and colourful," said Addison. "It was almost overwhelming when we finally got the boxes in and we got to hold it in our hands."
The Benevolent Misadventures of Satch and Moe will debut at the Saskatoon Comic and Entertainment Expo on Sept. 17 and 18.
Broken Jack Comics: Addison, Olson and Strait are already working on issue two.
