From ASSMAN to ZYG0TE: SGI has rejected more than 3,000 vanity licence plates
SGI has rejected slogans for promoting risky driving behaviour, crimes, drugs, racial slurs
Darin Lanigan — the Regina man who will soon have the Donald Trump head-scratcher COVFEFE on the back of his car — isn't the only Saskatchewan driver whose request for a vanity licence plate has raised eyebrows at Saskatchewan Government Insurance over the years.
He was lucky: His plate name got accepted. Many other requests before his have met a dead end.
Since the 1980s, SGI has reviewed and ultimately denied thousands of requests for special plates in the province. There are nearly 3,700 slogans on its banned list.
The organization has rejected slogans for promoting risky driving behaviour, crimes, drugs, racial slurs or for having sexual or political connotations.
They run the gamut.
Many are simply crude: CRAP or ARSE, for instance.
Some are essentially harmless, though surprisingly popular. DORKY doesn't just show up on the list, but DORKY1, DORKY2 and so on do, all the way up to DORKY9.
Others are rather ingenious in their construction, revealing themselves as targets for rejection only gradually. Take 4NIK8.
And far too many are unprintable here.
SGI rejected just over 100 licence plate ideas in 2016.
For the curious, here's an edited list of unacceptable Saskatchewan vanity plates. More offensive terms have been left off the list, though grammar and spelling enthusiasts be warned.
