Quebec man charged with exploitation in Saskatoon sex, drug case
A Quebec man already charged with dealing drugs in Saskatoon is now facing accusations of exploitation under new federal prostitution laws.
Charges come under new Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act
A 27-year-old Quebec man is sitting in a Saskatoon jail charged with dealing drugs and exploiting a woman under Ottawa's new prostitution laws.
In May, Saskatoon police charged Mali Jean, from Laval, Quebec, with trafficking drugs in Saskatoon.
Today, he was charged with exploiting a woman and making money from that exploitation. Jean is also accused of assaulting the woman with a belt and buckle.
He appeared by video in provincial court.
The charges come under the government's new prostitution laws, the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act, which came into effect late last year.
The case involves one alleged victim and is still under investigation.
Jean is due back in court Tuesday, to set a date for a bail hearing.
