Province to make it easier for adopted children and parents to find each other
Right now it takes 3 years for Post-Adoptive Services to begin a case
The Saskatchewan government says it's working on changing regulations that would help adoptees and birth parents discover each others' identities.
"Society has grown to become more open about adoption and individuals directly involved in the adoption process want better access to birth information," said Ellen McGuire, the Director of Service Delivery in the Child and Family Programs Division. "This will allow them to learn about who they are and to build a greater sense of identity."
Right now it can take up to three years for Post-Adoption Services — a government service that provides free registry and search services for those directly involved in adoptions — to begin working on a case.
"We've been asked to look at our legislation and regulations to determine what changes need to be made to make it easier for adoptees and birth parents to receive identifying information on registrations," McGuire said.
The government says more information about the new regulations will likely come early in the new year.
