Montgomery residents give up condo fight

Residents of a Saskatoon community say they're disappointed a condo development will likely move forward.

A controversial condominium development has been given the green light by a City of Saskatoon committee.

The city's Municipal Planning Commission gave its approval to build a condominium development on Tuesday. It will be placed right next to the city's Montgomery Place neighbourhood.

Residents of Montgomery Place have been fighting the development for a year and a half. Residents there are worried the new developments will increase traffic in the area by significantly increasing the number of people who live there.

Former community association president Jim Earle says he's disappointed.

"For us, I think it's over. We were told there won't be any more public meetings, and that's been brought forward at this meeting," he said.

Earle believes the move will change the nature of the community.

"It's very idyllic, country style living, and to double our population, which is what this is going to do. We're going to go from two thousand people to four thousand people living in Montgomery Place and it's a concern for the residents," he said.

At today's meeting, city administration said that the city's infrastructure, from roads to sewers, will be able to maintain the new development with a few modifications.

It's still not clear how many condominium units will be built on the land. North Ridge Developments says it's too early to come out with a concrete plan.

City council still needs to vote on the recommendation. Construction isn't expected until at least next year.
