Families whose dogs died due to a heating malfunction at a Saskatoon kennel will gather on Saturday for a memorial service.

Fourteen dogs died when a room overheated at Playful Paws Pet Center last weekend. The building's rooftop heating units pushed the heat into one of the facility's upstairs kennel rooms. It got so hot that dogs being kept there died.

The service aims to unite the families who owned the 14 dogs and show them support from the community.

The public is welcome to attend the pet-friendly event. Seating is available for the first 300 people, with the funeral home able to broadcast the service to the surrounding outdoor area if necessary.

Those wishing to make donations have been asked to bring a tennis ball, which will be taken to the dog parks in the city.

The service will be held at Acadia-McKague's Funeral Centre at 11 a.m. CST.
