Ken Cheveldayoff says he's going to throw his hat in the ring to lead the Saskatchewan Party.

The parks minister made the announcement before a cabinet meeting Wednesday.

The Saskatoon MLA says he will step down from his cabinet post in a few days and officially launch his campaign on Monday.

In the past, Cheveldayoff has served as the minister of Crown corporations, minister of First Nations and Métis relations, and minister of environment.

Reiter not running

In another development, Health Minister Jim Reiter says he will not be running for the leadership.

"A number of factors have impacted my decision, including family health issues that need to be dealt with in the next few months," Reiter wrote in a statement released to the media. "My family and serving the constituents of Rosetown-Elrose will always be my priority."

Tina Beaudry-Mellor and Jeremy Harrison have also announced their intention to run.

The leadership convention will be held on Jan. 27, 2018.
