Keep uniformed patrols on Saskatoon streets: CSP organizer

Organizers are hoping Saskatoon's Community Support Program will be renewed.

Supporters hope a pilot program that puts community workers on the streets of downtown Saskatoon will be renewed.

The Community Support Program hires uniformed workers to monitor street activity and offer help to people who need it.

Brent Penner is chair of the Street Activity Steering Committee.

He said the new program still isn't very well known.

"The program's new, so trying to ensure people out there know the program exists, know that they can call these individuals if there are problems or things to check out. That's one thing that we're grappling with."

Police said they like the program, but that it doesn't appear to have reduced the number of calls to the downtown area.

The program's money runs out this summer.
