'Gordie Howe Bridge' sign up on Saskatoon's Circle Drive South bridge
Saskatoon city council unanimously approved the name following Howe's death
The sign declaring the Circle Drive South Bridge as the Gordie Howe Bridge is now up.
Saskatoon city council unanimously approved naming the bridge after Mr. Hockey in June following Howe's death at the age of 88.
While he was born in nearby Floral, Sask., the hockey legend spent his formative years in Saskatoon.
The sign went up Thursday just days before Howe's family arrives in the Bridge City to lay his remains to rest.
Howe's cremated remains will be interred at SaskTel Centre, at the base of a statue in his honour, along with his late wife Colleen. The provincial government approved a request to designate the statue as a cemetery.
A ceremony is being held Sunday at 2 p.m. CST before the Saskatoon Blades' season opener versus the Swift Current Broncos.
All four of Howe's children, along with his grandchildren, will be in attendance. Veteran Hockey Night in Canada sportscaster Bob Cole will emcee the ceremony.
