Fire at former Lighthouse building in Saskatoon displaces 38 people

Thirty-eight people in Saskatoon have been displaced following a fire at Aegis Holistic Renewal, formerly known as the Lighthouse, at Second Avenue and 20th Street.   

Firefighters responded to a report of alarm bells around 6 p.m. Wednesday. In a news release, the Saskatoon Fire Department said the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in a concealed joist space between floors.

The fire was put out and no one was hurt, but four suites were damaged. 

Twila Reddekopp, managing director at Aegis Holistic Renewal, said the 38 displaced people were moved from the supported living tower to the independent living tower in the same complex. 

"Independent living people are back in their suites. For the supported living people, we have enough empty rooms on the independent tower side that we will be able to move the supported tower people over there and we'll provide services in that building," she said. 

"Everybody's well. We've got [the displaced people] in our old shelter rooms for now until we can start moving them into the other side tomorrow," Reddekopp said on Thursday.

The fire department said damages are estimated to be $150,000.
