Death of 5-year-old results in new charges after Sask. highway crash

A Saskatoon woman is facing an additional charge after a family of four was killed in a highway crash.

Catherine McKay,49, is now facing four counts of impaired driving causing death.

The new charge comes after the death of Kamryn Van de Vorst, 5.

Jordan and Chanda Van de Vorst, along with their two-year-old son, Miguire, were killed early Sunday morning when their car was hit on Highway 11, on the outskirts of Saskatoon. Five-year-old Kamryn died later in hospital.

McKay made a brief court appearance on Tuesday, and is set to appear in court later this week.

She is listed as the executive director of the Saskatoon Sports Council. McKay has also wrestled professionally under the name Cathie Cougar in the Canadian Wrestling Federation.

On Sunday, RCMP said a Hyundai Elantra car was travelling west on Highway 11 when it was hit by a Jeep Wrangler SUV, driven by McKay, attempting to cross the highway on Wanuskewin Road.

Family and friends have expressed their grief and shock at the loss of the Van de Vorst family.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
