The City of Saskatoon's director of environmental and corporate initiatives has been fired.

Sources confirm Brenda Wallace was fired on Friday. Wallace had been the city's environmental manager since 2010.

Among other duties, Wallace was responsible for reinventing Saskatoon's garbage pickup system. Earlier this month, council voted to adopt a pay-as-you-throw system, where three different garbage cart sizes will be implemented, and home owners will be charged accordingly.

A mandatory organic waste pickup program will be introduced for homeowners at the same time.

In a statement, City Manager Jeff Jorgenson said the city had no comment and "did not discuss employee-employer matters in public."
