Coyote sightings on rise in Saskatoon
Coyote sightings common in many Canadian cities
The City of Saskatoon reminds people to keep a safe distance if they spot a coyote.
This week in a media release, the city said coyote sightings have increased at various locations across Saskatoon. The city said people need to keep their distance from coyotes and from all wildlife, as animals can be unpredictable when confronted.
The city noted rapid expansion and development of larger green spaces has resulted in more coyote sightings. Coyotes are common in all major cities across Canada and they can be spotted in residential and commercial areas, especially if food and shelter are readily available.
Tips when a coyote is spotted
- Never approach the animal
- Look for a way out
- Be observant of the coyote's movement
- Act assertive, yell, "act big" and wave your arms so that coyotes maintain a healthy respect for humans
- Ensure the animal has an escape route and enough space to flee the situation
- Keep pets on a leash and under control
