Saskatoon's downtown movie theatre will be getting an upgrade.

Cineplex has announced it plans to open the city's first Imax cinemas at its Scotiabank Theatre Saskatoon and VIP location in the city's downtown.

The Imax screen will be the theatre chain's 25th Imax location.

According to the company, the auditorium will offer a "new immersive entertainment experience with cutting-edge projection, powerful digital surround sound and a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall screen."

"First and foremost, the community doesn't have an Imax screen," said director of communications Sarah Van Lange. "It'll be a first for Saskatoon, and that was really important for us."

The company will not be building any extra space onto the theatre to add the screen..

"We'll be converting one of the existing auditoriums into the Imax auditorium," said Van Lange. "So, over the next four to six weeks that transformation will be happening."

Regina has had an Imax screen at the Saskatchewan Science Centre since 1989.

The new theatre is expected to open in May.
