Cheyann Peeteetuce, woman who killed 2 teens in crash, gets 6 years
Crown asked that she be sentenced to 12 years in prison
Cheyann Peeteetuce, the young Saskatoon woman who has pleaded guilty to killing two teenagers while driving impaired, was sentence today to six years in prison.
Minus time served, the 22 year old will end up in prison for four years and four months.
The Crown asked that she be sentenced to 12 years in prison. Defence lawyers asked for a sentence of closer to six years, minus time served on remand.
After the judge delivered the sentence, Haughey's mother cried and screamed and his father told the judge the sentence was ridiculous.
Sarah Wensley's father, Dave, spoke to reporters outside the courtroom. He is also very upset with the decision.
"Our kids were killed by two Indian Posse gang members, fleeing police, in a stolen vehicle. That is a fact," he said.
Defense lawyer, Valerie Harvey, read an apology letter from Peeteetuce, to the families, outside of court after the sentencing.
"This has been the hardest year and I just would like you to know I have prayed for your family, hoping that your pain will be eased by the creator's loving mercy," Harvey read. "Please accept my heartfelt apology today. I am sincerely sorry."
Late last year, Peeteetuce pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death, along with a host of other charges.
She was driving a stolen truck during the accident. The crash happened in the early evening of May 5, 2014 at 22nd Street W. and Avenue M.
J.P. Haughey, 17, and his front seat passenger, Sarah Wensley, 17, were killed. A 16-year-old girl in the back seat suffered serious injuries but survived.
