Traffic on Broadway Avenue will be impacted this coming summer as the city rehabilitates the busy corridor between 8th Street and the Broadway Bridge.

"We're really trying not to look at this as a negative thing because we're going to come out of it shining a lot more afterwards," said Sarah Marchildon, executive director of the Broadway Business Improvement District.

Construction is slated to start in May and could take until September to complete.

The Broadway Bridge could be closed for approximately one week. Traffic could be impacted on Broadway Avenue with detours and restrictions.

While Broadway Avenue is a popular destination for shopping and restaurants, Marchildon is optimistic about the project.

"We are a pedestrian district. Sure, we are also a thoroughfare that has cars coming through, but a lot of people that come are then walking in our district," she said.

BID hopes construction is finished before street fair

Marchildon is hoping construction ends early because the BID is hosting the 33rd annual Broadway Street Fair on Sept. 10, which is enjoyed by approximately 10,000 people.

Last summer, the repair work on the University Bridge wrapped up four weeks early due to dry weather.

"The city has committed to us— and with us—that the message will be we're open for business."

Rehabilitation is also planned for Attridge Drive and Central Avenue, the Ruth Street overpass on Idylwyld Drive and work will continue on the Victor Road Interchange at Highway 11, according to the city.

A report which outlines the anticipated traffic restrictions will be presented to the transportation committee on Tuesday.
