Students at the University of Regina have voted in favour of adding the cost of a universal bus pass on their student fees.

The U-Pass proposal was put to a referendum and passed by margin of 242 votes (1,520 voted in favour and 1278 voted against).

The bus pass fee is expected to cost students between $70 and $90 per semester.

Students who live on or within one kilometre of campus, and those who live outside of Regina, can opt out of the bus pass.

The U-Pass idea was previously rejected in a 2009 referendum.

Student union president Devon Peters said he'll take the U-Pass result to the City of Regina.

"The next step is talking to the city and letting them know, you know, 'Hey, this is the wish of the students, and let's do it," Peters said.
