Star Trek fans fondly remember Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock

Actor Leonard Nimoy died at the age of 83 and many science fiction fans fondly remember his role as Mr. Spock in the series Star Trek.

One of the props used in the show, a Vulcan harp, was further developed into a functional instrument and a version that can be played on a tablet.

University of Regina computer science professor David Gerhard, a fan of the show, worked on the app.

"He only plays it three or four times on the show," Gerhard said. "But it's sort of a hint into a different world for him right, because he's so, you know, stand up-ish and logical, but then he plays a musical instrument and that's kind of neat. It sort of gave him a Sherlock Holmes feel."

Gerhard added many people are feeling the loss of Nimoy.

"It cracks a hole in the culture because so many people identify so strongly with the character that Nimoy developed," he said. "Just to know that will no longer be developed, it's a significant blow."

Another fan, Logan Drydale, said the character Nimoy developed is an enduring one.

"Mr. Nimoy's gone, but his character will live on forever through the movies, through television, just from being an iconic character," he said.
