Smudge walk aims to dispel North Central Regina myths

Hundreds of people participated in the fifth annual event.

This year's theme was "honour the community"

The sun came out just in time for the fifth annual Smudge Walk in Regina.

Hundreds of people participated in the North Central event Monday morning, which was organized by community members and local police.

"To have [police as] part of the committee, you know, we're thankful for that because they realize the importance of what something like this could do," said event spokesperson Myke Agecoutay.

The walk was first organized five years ago to help dispel myths about North Central after a MacLean's article named it Canada's worst neighbourhood.

But community members disagree with that assessment, choosing to focus on its growth instead, including the new stadium and the Mâmawêyatitân Centre — a large community facility set to be completed in 2017. In turn, the theme of this year's walk was "honour the community".

The walk was followed by a community barbecue.
