Regina's planned inner city mega-project formerly known as the North Central Shared Facility now has a new name — Mâmawêyatitân Centre.

The $42-million complex is being built in the heart of North Central, the inner-city Regina neighbourhood northwest of the downtown.

It's designed to replace a number of existing facilities, including Scott Collegiate, the Albert-Scott Community Centre and the Albert Library.

There'll also be a child care facility, a city recreational complex and a police station.

"It will change the way children are educated," said Education Minister Don Morgan, whose ministry is contributing about $31 million to the project.

The new name came following consultations with the community and elders.

Mâmawêyatitân — pronounced "ma-ma-WAY-tee-tawn" according to officials — is a Cree word meaning "let's all be together". Many of Regina's aboriginal residents live in North Central.

Construction is expected to be completed by the spring of 2017.
