Regina, Saskatoon tops on crime severity index: StatsCan
Despite unenviable ranking, crime rate dropping in both cities
Crime is down in Regina and Saskatoon but the two cities are still tops when it comes to the crime severity index, Statistics Canada says.
A report on the 2013 crime severity index (CSI), which is a measure of police-reported crime volume and the severity of crime, was released by StatsCan on Wednesday.
In 2013, Regina had the highest CSI of the 33 communities surveyed, scoring 109 on the index that uses 2006 as a baseline. That's despite a decrease of 7 per cent from the year before.
Saskatoon was second, with a CSI of 99.1.
If one looks only at the crime rate (not factoring in severity) Regina and Saskatoon are still No. 1 and No. 2 (with 8,069 and 7,958 reported crimes per 100,000 people, respectively).
Barrie, Ont., came in lowest on the crime severity index, with a rating of 42.8. Canada-wide, the rating was 68.7.
Meanwhile, Saskatchewan had the highest CSI among the provinces, as well as the highest youth crime severity index.
