Regina police officer charged with assault
A Regina police officer has been charged with assault following a complaint that excessive force was used on a man who was in custody.
Const. Colin B. Belcourt, 28, will be making a first court appearance on Sept. 27 on a charge of common assault, the Regina Police Service said Tuesday.
The alleged victim is a 25-year-old man who launched his complaint on Feb. 27, 2011. The allegations were brought to the Saskatchewan Police Commission and independently investigated, the police said.
Belcourt, who has been on the force for four years, has been reassigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of the criminal case, the police said.
Police are also doing an internal investigation under the Police Act which could be the basis for disciplinary action.
Police didn't identify the complainant.
