Regina Police giving math lessons in school zones as speed limit set to change
Limit will drop to 30 km/h on Sept. 1
Police are paying special attention to school zones this week as the new academic year approaches — with new speed limits around schools.
Starting Sept. 1, the speed limit in school zones is dropping to 30 kilometres an hour. Right now, it's 40 kilometres per hour.
The city is switching out the signs now.
Police are now pulling over drivers travelling faster than 30 kilometres an hour, even though the new limit is not yet in effect.
"We aren't giving tickets for those exceeding 30 kilometres an hour," said Les Parker with the Regina Police Service.
"We might pull them over and give them a warning."
That is not to say police are not giving out tickets. On its Twitter page, police said traffic officers gave out 10 tickets Wednesday morning in a school zone on Argyle Street.
The tickets averaged $290.
Parker said that the tickets are for drivers who are travelling on average in excess of 50 kilometres an hour.
