Regina cancer walk raises $507K
Wet weather overnight Friday and into Saturday morning did not dampen the spirits of participants of the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life event in Regina, where organizers say a record $507,575 was raised.
It was the ninth year for the fundraising campaign, which sees cancer survivors and people who have lost a loved one to the disease participate in a sort of relay race through Wascana Park.
"I was so moved and so encouraged by seeing all the yellow shirts and reading the white messages on the bags," Susan Thomason, who survived a bout with cancer four years, said Friday night. "It was so moving I had to be a part of this. I just had to be a part."
The Regina event was one of 17 held throughout Saskatchewan.
"I want to say a huge thank you to all our participants, volunteers and sponsors," Tana Cameron-Mario, the lead organizer, said Saturday.
