RCMP museum gets short-term cash
The financially-strapped RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina, a museum for the Mounties, is getting a special cash-infusion from the federal government, to keep the doors open over the short-term.
The centre, in a report released in October, said it was in need of ongoing government cash "to ensure the viability and sustainability of the centre."
On Tuesday, federal officials said the facility would receive "$2.1 million over the next two years to provide the centre with the time and resources it needs to develop a longer term plan that is based on sound business principles and that will stabilize its operations."
The building, which has a large theatre space and exhibit halls, has seen a drop in attendance since it opened in 2007 on the grounds of the RCMP cadet training school in Regina.
The centre is owned and operated by a non-profit board, but many of its exhibits and artifacts belong to the RCMP.
