Prince Albert, Sask.'s Brittany Hudak competing in 1st Paralympics

It was a proud moment for two parents from Prince Albert, Sask., this morning as their daughter Brittany Hudak made her Paralympic debut, competing in the 15 kilometre cross-country skiing event.

It's all about experience. Hudak, 20, isn't supposed to get a medal in Sochi, Russia, and finished in 10th place, but she's looking ahead to future events.

Her parents Dave and Rhonda are cheering her on all the way.

She was born missing part of her left arm and at first, her parents were terrified of what the future would hold.

"We were like, Oh my God, what are we in for? What's her life going to be like?" Rhonda Hudak said. "Looking back, she does everything. She's amazing."

Dave Hudak said his daughter demonstrated her resolve early.

"When she was little, learning how to ride a bike, I put an extra handle on the bike so it would balance her out," he said.

"She took that thing for a rip, came back and said 'Dad, can you take that thing off?' After that, I never really worried about her."

She only started skiing two years ago, but placed fourth in her first World Cup Race.

Competing in Sochi, she intends to get experience at that level. She told her parents to start looking ahead to the 2018 Paralympics in South Korea.

Hudak will also compete in the sprint and five kilometre races later this week.

Hudak was recruited by another Saskatchewan Paralympian, 52-year-old Colette Bourgonje. 

Bourgonje came in 13th in her event, 12 kilometre sitting cross-country, on Sunday.
