Steel helps Pats through historic year of hockey
Steel brought home the Chrysler Top Scorer Award.
The Anaheim Ducks prospect led the CHL with 131 points in 66 games. He scored 50 goals and 81 assists, helping the Regina Pats to a first place finish in the WHL's regular season.
The Pats finished a historic season on May 14, falling to the Seattle Thunderbirds in Game 6 of the WHL championship series. It was the first time the team had an opportunity to play for the WHL's Ed Chynoweth Cup since 1984.
The 19-year-old from Sherwood Park, Alta., finished with the CHL's highest point total since Brendan Shinnimin of the Tri-City Americans recorded 134 points in 69 games in 2011-2012.
He beat out Alex DeBrincat of the Erie Otters with 127 points in 63 games, and Vitalii Abramov of the Gatineau Olympiques who scored 104 points in 66 games this season.
Steel wasn't the only WHL winner of the evening, with Nolan Patrick of the Brandon Wheat Kings taking home the Sherwin-Williams Top Prospect Award and Tyler Wong of the Lethbridge Hurricanes winning the Mastercard Humanitarian of the Year Award.
The awards were presented as part of the 2017 Mastercard Memorial Cup festivities in Windsor.
