Sask. man arrested, charged with 1st-degree murder in 2020 death of wife

A Saskatchewan man has been arrested and charged with the first-degree murder of his wife.

The husband of a Meota, Sask., woman has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, more than a year after her death.

Cindy MacKay was transported to hospital in North Battleford on Feb. 7, 2020, in medical distress. She died in hospital on Feb. 12, 2020. 

RCMP said while she was in hospital, health-care professionals raised concerns with the detachment, which prompted an investigation.

Following what police are calling a complex investigation, MacKay's husband, 38-year-old Michael MacKay, was arrested without incident on Thursday in Warman, Sask.

At the time of Cindy MacKay's death, Michael MacKay was also living in Meota. 

His first court appearance is set for Friday in the North Battleford Provincial Court by telephone.

  • A previous version of this story, based on information from RCMP, indicated health-care professionals informed police about their concerns after Cindy MacKay died. In fact, RCMP later clarified they were informed of those concerns while Cindy MacKay was in hospital.
