Saskatchewan Roughriders running back Joe McKnight's funeral is being held in New Orleans today.

The 28-year-old football player was shot Dec.1 during what police have described as a road rage incident in a New Orleans suburb.

Ronald Gasser, 54, is accused of killing McKnight. Gasser was charged with manslaughter Dec. 6 after initially being released without charges after the incident.

McKnight finished the season with the Roughriders after being signed in September. He played three games, and made 38 carries, gaining a total of 228 yards. Before that, he played with the Edmonton Eskimos. McKnight also played with the NFL between 2010 and 2014 with the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets.

Bond was set at $500,000 US for Gasser, but his attorney has asked a judge to reduce it. A hearing on the request is set for Dec. 21.

The funeral was scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CST.
