Drivers need more training about bicycles, Bike Regina says
SGI driver's handbook deals with bikes, but it's not enough, group says
As the weather warms up and more people begin using their bikes, a group of cyclists in Regina is hoping Saskatchewan Government Insurance will better educate drivers on how to share the road.
The SGI driver's handbook includes a 154-word section on sharing the road with bicycles, but Bike Regina thinks there should be more.
The group wants more in-school driver training to teach students how to safely approach and pass cyclists.
"The road is just not for cars. It is a public shared space so everyone should have an equal right to that road space," Bike Regina spokesperson Luke Nichols said. "If we can have drivers overtaking safely, that may encourage more people to bike."
Nichols says he has a scary brush with a vehicle at least once a week while riding. The group plans to take its concerns to the Regina City Council meeting on April 27.
