Clothing, furniture and more: Community prepares for refugees
Word of support efforts spreads through social media
Community groups, including members of the Muslim community in Regina, are preparing for the arrival of refugees.
They're planning clothing, furniture and food drives to help Syrian families. It's anticipated that several hundred refugees may arrive in Regina soon.
Working with other groups that have experience with settling refugees, people met Sunday at the Islamic Association of Saskatchewan's Regina base to get organized.
"It's wonderful to see," Sabreena Haque, one of the people working on the initiative, said. "People's humanity comes out, when you see that people are suffering."
Several efforts to support refugees have emerged in recent days, as word spreads through social media about different ways to support newcomers.
"A lot of people in our community have been wanting to help," Haque said. The effort in Regina began with a few emails and postings on Facebook.
Haque said people are looking to provide help in any way they can. She added the Saskatoon chapter of the Islamic Association of Saskatchewan has been organizing a similar campaign.
