Thousands of bunnyhug-wearing Saskatchewan Rush fans were successful during their attempt at breaking the world record for the biggest group hug over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Rush took on the Vancouver Stealth in Saskatoon.

With 14,387 fans in attendance, the crowd "unofficially" broke the previous group hug record of 10,554.

"Everyone participated and it turned out awesome," said media spokesperson Brandon Urban.

The night was dubbed "Bunny Hug Night," inspired by the unique-to-Saskatchewan nickname for a hooded sweater.

"Of course, bunny hugs are a huge part of Saskatchewan culture so we're encouraging fans to wear their bunny hugs to the game and we thought this would be a fun record to try and break," said Urban. "It brings everyone together."

The last documented record for the biggest group hug was set in Canada in 2010, when 10,554 people embraced at an event called the Bear Hug III in Ottawa.

Saturday's attempt at SaskTel Centre was held in the second half of the match.

Urban said the goal was to win bragging rights for Saskatchewan. He said he hopes the record will stay in the province for a long time.

According to Urban, the Rush submitted a request for Guinness World Records to attend the game but did not receive a response.
