1. Red Bull Kite Farm (Feb 14)

Jenn Smith Nelson is a Canadian travel writer living in Regina.
Just minutes out of the city, for the first time ever, Red Bull Kite Farm - an endurance snow kite event - will be taking place in Saskatchewan. Not only do we have sufficient snow, but also with the bright open space of the prairies combined with an abundance of winter winds, this is the ideal place for world-class kiteboarding. Free to the public, there will be a snow slide, sleigh rides and more.

2. Ski or Snowboard at Mission Ridge in beautiful Qu'Appelle Valley (just 45 minutes of town)

Take the whole family out for a snow day. Don't ski or own gear? No problem. Mission Ridge has a learn-to-ski program for both kids and adults, and all of equipment can be rented on-site. Open Feb 14 and Feb 16. Or, if flat surfaces are more your family's style, strap on snowshoes or cross-country skis and head to nearby Wascana Trails (20 km from Regina) or White Butte Trails (20 minutes east of the city). Both offer beautiful winter scenery and many kilometers of groomed trails (Wascana Trails -15 k / White Butte 12.7 km). A great way to work in some exercise while having a lot of fun outside. Check out TourismSaskatchewan.com for more info.

3. Get the whole family together and then some to book a custom sleigh ride at Beaver Creek Ranch

Located 15-20 minutes out of the city, near Lumsden, you and your family and friends can tour the beautiful Qu'Appelle Valley by horse drawn sleigh at Beaver Creek Ranch. The sleigh accommodates up to 14 people and fireworks are available upon request.

4. Go on an Arctic Adventure right here in the city at the RCMP Heritage Centre

Take part in an afternoon of fun and excitement. Activities include crafts, mock ice fishing, scavenger hunt, snowshoe course, dog sled demos, and more. Regular admission to the RCMP Heritage Centre applies, complimentary hot drinks. 1 - 4pm, prizes to be won. Visit website for more information.

5. Try your hands at reeling in the big one over the long weekend and head out ice fishing at one of the nearby lakes

Take your pick of Pasqua, Long Mountain or Buffalo Pound Echo and Katepwa Lake. Pack the hot chocolate and warm soup! Need some assistance with equipment or want to rent an ice shack? Give Regina Beach Outfitters a call and check out iFish Saskatchewan.
