16-year-old driver charged after fatal crash on Regina's Ring Road

Regina police have charged a 16-year-old boy after a fatal crash on Ring Road Friday that left one man dead and five others hurt.

The teenager faces numerous charges including criminal negligence causing death

Regina police have charged a 16-year-old boy after a fatal crash on the city's Ring Road Friday. 

The crash happened Friday afternoon shortly after 4 p.m. CST on the highway's westbound lanes south of the McDonald Street exit.

Police said preliminary investigations tell them the boy was driving eastbound when his vehicle crossed the ditch and hit a westbound vehicle head-on. The driver of the second vehicle, a 49-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the victim's vehicle as well as four others in the teenager's vehicle were all taken to hospital.

Police said Sunday information from the coroner's investigation led to the arrest of the teenage driver. Police said the investigation is continuing, but the boy currently faces a total of six charges.

The charges against the boy include:

  • One charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death
  • Two charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm
  • One charge of criminal negligence causing death
  • Two charges of criminal negligence causing bodily harm

Police said they cannot release the boy's name because of his age. He is scheduled to appear in Youth Court on April 29.
