Quebec hopes water meters will reduce waste
Quebec's non-residential water customers are told to install water meters in effort to reduce water waste.
Non-residential water users in Quebec will be forced to install water meters next year in an effort to reduce water-waste by forcing municipalities to account for their water consumption.
Residential customers will be required to install water meters a few years later.
This action was prompted by a Liberal campaign promise to halt water waste.
"We can't continue to do in Quebec what we have done for generations, that's to treat water like it's nothing," said Environment Minister Thomas Mulcair
Compared to Torontonians, who consume 519 liters of water per person per day, Montrealers use 1,350 litres per day.
A study by environmentalists last year showed that water meters did not directly contribute to a reduction of water use.
