University goes to the dogs for Mental Health Awareness Week

The University of Prince Edward Island held its first pet-a-puppy event as a part of Mental Health Awareness Week.

St. John Ambulance brought a few of its therapy dogs to campus so students could cuddle them.

"Just to be able to do some simple things like sitting with a puppy, those things that are simple to do can alleviate stress," said Cathy Rose, co-chair of Mental Health Awareness Week.

"I think puppies see beyond everything. They don't discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, gender, any of that. They just see you for who you are as a human being and they love you."

There was a lineup of students yesterday to see the dogs, said Rose.

She hopes to have a similar event in the near future.
