UPEI Athletics partner with chaplaincy on food drive this weekend
Boxes will be set up on campus to collect non-perishable food items
UPEI Athletics is partnering with the university's chaplaincy centre to help fill shelves at the campus food bank.
The university is hoping for big crowds this weekend at the Mickey Place Memorial Basketball Tournament, which begins Friday.
Eight basketball teams from across Canada are competing in the annual three-day event and boxes will be set up on campus to collect non-perishable food items.
"We've got 13 games happening here on campus and we've got teams across the Maritimes and it's a special weekend. It's the best opportunity to really help out with some great causes and none bigger than the one on campus," said Ron Annear, UPEI varsity sport co-ordinator.
"This time of the year, and really throughout the entire later part of the semester and in through the winter semester, there's many students and students with families on campus that are struggling to make ends meet," he said.
Donations can also be dropped off at the Chi Wan Young Sports Centre.
The tournament runs until 6 p.m. Sunday.
